Actually, in backgammon, success is not thru some strategies involved, but the strategies that are made on the rolling of the dice, the matching of scores, also your opponents' equal game of play, and ones' abilities to win this game. The dice that you rolled may require you to take a certain route, your match score may force you to engage in another kind of game, or your play itself is the right strategy .
One can not depend on the opening play alone to carry his strategy all along because the dice rolls and it affects the face of the game whenever the result of the roll of dice is determined. Hence, strategies also change as they were influenced by the route the game is taking.
Success in backgammon can be achieved by being wise enough to use his varied strategies on the game, and increase his tricks in playing a simple game. Success in backgammon also lies on one's ability to simultaneously dictate the flow of the game and to decide wisely on the outcome of the match score and the dice.
Mostly opening rolls give several options to play with some difference in equity, but often with some difference in the amount of gammons won and lost, and with some variations that a game may take a certain path. However, success in backgammon can be traced with varied kind of plays. Let us examine two examples;
An opening roll of 64 will give several options such as 8/2 6/2, 24/18 13/9, or 24/14. The three kinds of plays are all strong but they do not carry the same strength. They are also dependent on some strategies to fully maximize their strength.
24/14 has its strength to move one of those ten pips and move ahead onwards the right shots. A fight for an advanced anchor will not always be a great decision, nor it is good to make a prime, but it will increase the chance to win with such no gammon running game. It does not pressure much your opponent but the effects is simple; getting hit and fighting it out on the other side of the board, or you avoid to get hit and possibly lessen contact and bring the fight to your own. Hence, sweet success in backgammon is achieved.
The strength of 8/2 6/2 lies in its ability to make a blocking home board point, hence giving its opponent the disadvantage of leaving blots, and leaves your opponent with nothing to shoot at. In some interesting ways, it set opponent to some limits. Though this is not a good play for a running or holding game, but this may trigger for the prime or a blitz and can be effective in the coming blot hitting game.
